What is a Load Bank?A load bank is a piece of electrical test equipment used to simulate an electrical load, to test an electric power source without connecting it to its normal operating load.A locomotive would be positioned on one of the diesel test roads alongside the test monitoring building.Output power cables (included in kit) from the engines generator would be disconnected and joined to external cables that were part of a load bank.A load bank consists of resistances. This is so that the heat generated by the electrical energy can be dispersed.The output from the generator is checked at various loads which is done by increasing the resistance in the load bank.Current and voltage are measured on meters located inside the Test House. Depot/Workshop Vacuum Brake Test TrolleyOO GaugePack of 2Air Brake Test Trolley - OO Gauge - Pack of 2A Vacuum Test Rig is used after maintenance of the vacuum braking system on wagons and coaches to confirm the operation is in accordance with design and set-up criteria.
The Vacuum Test Rig is powered by a workshop 415vAC, 3-phase power supply, and is fitted with a control valve to allow control the brakes as if the wagon or coach were coupled to a locomotive.
The Vacuum Test Rig is positioned close to the end of the wagon or coach and connected using a standard vacuum brake pipe; a vacuum gauge is fitted on the front of the Test Rig show the level of vacuum in the train pipe.
It is important for wagons and coaches to all brake evenly and consistently, therefore Vacuum Test Rig is used to enable measurements of leakage rates and the brake force build up and release times to be recorded. During each brake application and release operation the time it takes for the brake cylinder to apply on the wagon or coach is measured using a stopwatch.
When not in-use the Vacuum Test Rig is parked away neatly in the corner of the workshop.
