Information about of the use of Side Lamps by British Rail BR Brake vans carried a tail lamp and two side lamps, the side lamps showing white lights to the front and rear, but having red removable slide shades so that they were able to show red lights to the rear. Side lamps had a slot/bracket fitting on both sides so that they were a standard design that could go on either side of the van, and be reversed if necessary. At night, during fog or falling snow, or in tunnels, the brake van displayed 3 red lights to the rear and a white light on each side facing forward. This was so that loco crew could look out either side of the loco and affirm that the whole train was following the loco in good order. If the train was routed into a loop or refuge siding, or was on a reception or departure road adjacent to a running line, the red removable slide shade was removed from the side lamp on that side of the van, so that the display was of 2 red lights and a white, in a V shape with the white light closest to the main running line. If the guard wanted to attract the traincrew's attention to a problem, this could be done by reversing the side lamps to show a red light forward; signalmen and others would also be able to spot this and you wouldn't go far before the train was stopped. If a train was being propelled with the brake van leading in the right direction along a running line, the two side lamps showed a white light 'forward' in the direction of travel, and the tail lamp was removed. OO Gauge (supplied unpainted)This set of brake pipes is enough for both ends of one Class 37/0 Locomotive, the UNPAINTED pack includes:- 2 - Air Brake Pipes (BP) - Red4 - Main Reservoir Air Pipes (MRP) - Yellow2 - Vacuum Hoses with hose dummy bracket (VAC)4 - Regulating Control Air Pipes (CA) - White2 - Steam Heat Pipes (S/H)2 - Multiple Working Jumper Cables (M/W) - Orange2 - Multiple Working Jumper Receptacles (M/W) - Orange4 - Pipe mounting brackets that fit under the buffer beam, one at each side (see notes below). Until the 1960s the majority of BR locomotives had provision only for Vacuum Train brakes. From the early 1960s the standard air brake system was introduced, therefore it was common to see locos and rolling stock dual braked (i.e. fitted with both vacuum and air brakes). The use of vacuum brakes on BR was phased out during the 1980s. For dual braked locos, fit the air brake and vacuum brake pipes.For vacuum only braked locos, fit just the vacuum brake pipes.For train heating boiler fitted locos, fit the steam heat pipes.Notes:- There were many variations between members of the Class 37/0 fleet in pipe configurations, fitting and placement; therefore it is recommended to refer to photographs of the real thing when fitting these parts. All pipes have a 0.7mm peg that can be fitted into a drilled hole in the buffer beam, alternatively the peg can be cut-off and the pipe attached with a small amount of adhesive. These parts are delicate and may not be suitable for use with couplings fitted, especially on tighter radius curves. The pipes are supplied unpainted, please refer to pictures for typical colours.
